School Projects - Using real solar data - Danielle Bewsher

Danielle BewsherThese School Projects have been adapted from NASA resources for use in UK Schools and involve using real solar data. Danielle Bewsher is one of our Solar Guides - she works at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and enjoys working with school students. These projects are suitable for KS3 and KS4 students.

Summary

Sunspots and Magnetic Fields

This project explores the magnetic nature of the Sun. It shows how the hot ionised gas (plasma) in the solar atmosphere traces out the magnetic field. It relates to the Magnetic Sun section of Sun|trek.

Differential Rotation of the Sun

This project investigates the rotation of the Sun using UV images. It relates to several sections of Sun|trek - the Earth and Beyond , the Solar Surface and Below and the Hot Solar Atmosphere.

Velocity and Acceleration of CME's

This project uses maths and science to measure the velocity and acceleration of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) observed by the SoHO spacecraft. It is a challenging exercise. The project is based on material in the Sun|trek section Flowing from the Sun: Solar Storms and Comets.

Solar Cycles

This project investigates the changes in the Sun over a period of time, the solar cycle. It uses measurements of the number of sunspots and images of the Sun in X-ray emission. It relates to the Sun|trek section Solar Surface and Beneath: Sunspots.
